Scientology and Religious FreedomHigh up on the marble walls in the foyer of the CIA headquarters there is a verse from the New Testament of the Bible, the book of John, chapter 8, verse 32, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." It is not unusual to find divine references when you're in "God's country", even in a building as profane as that of its intelligence service. And if its good enough for the company at Langley AFB? Take, for instance, the statement by the Scientology organization, which was founded by science fiction writer Ron Hubbard in 1954 in the USA, that it is a church, and its extended claim to the same effect through its branches, which today reach worldwide. In contrast to the Catholics, evangelicals, and other small and large cults, Scientology makes no secret about its love for money and power, which, here in Germany, has put the organization in the category of a commercial enterprise, as confirmed repeatedly by court decisions. This has had the consequence that the US State Department regularly labels Germany as a sinner in its annual report in International Religious Freedom.
So what it boils down to is this. Isn't the truth for universal religion, as practiced by Hubbard disciples, that it is money that sets you free, much more applicable than those old moldy claims made by the Christian fuddy-duddies?
