How many Scientologists are there?

NEW - ARIS 2008 result!

Thanks to 'plockton' on OCMB we have the ARIS 2008 results for Scientology. These were not included in the published table due to the high error rate for small religious groups:

Self-identified Scientology membership in USA:
1990 45,000
2001 55,000
2008 25,000

If I'm doing it right, the error on 25,000 for ARIS is 15-35,000, the error on 50,000 is 42-57,000. These ranges do not overlap so it's safe to say that the number of scientologists has fallen, but NOT safe to say it has 'more than halved' or anything similar. It's now official - Scientology is in recession, at least in its homeland.

There are NO entries for Scientology! Wicca? American Indian? yes, Scientology? NO - See LINK, scientology does not even warrant a footnote.

They call themselves Scientologists and claim their number is 8 million,
No, it's not even any "few hundred thousand". The active membership is pretty surely under 100,000 and more likely in the 40-50,000 range.

In the Scientologists Online[tm] effort to create web sites that point at Scientology to raise google ratings, there are only about 16,000 names - and this is after a massive campaign to get as many scientologists as possible to have their own Scientology Online websites -- even people who don't have computers or email
-- to maximize the apparent number of people who are willing to publicly say they are proudly a Scientologist. As I said, that effort only managed to find about 16,000 people.

Of the 16,000, about 8500 are in the US and of those, 3700 in California, 1500 in Florida, and the rest scattered.

In the great millenium event in LA last December Scientologists everywhere were heavily pushed to attend and to bring along family and friends. This was an event that all the hard core people in Southern California and many in other western states would want to attend. And they did not completely fill an arena set up for 14-16,000 people. And they doctored photos of the crowd to fill empty seats with swatches of people lifted from nearby, as Arnie Lerma discovered and revealed to the world and to Scientology's extreme embarrassment.

Figure the 10,000 or whatever who attended in LA included nearly all the Sea Org Staff and other staff there plus a lot of the active hard core members, and you see how few of them there actually are. And probably somewhat over half the active Scns in the world are in the US, so you have to stretch to get up to 100,000 worldwide. The claims of "millions" are total PR fakery and always have been.

City University of New York Survey says
50,000 Scientologists in US

Scientology's claim's of "8 million members" is a lie!
evidence from City University of New York shows only  55,000 say they are Scientologists in the US.

Mark Plummer says that when he was the address officer in ASHO in LA 20 years ago or so the entire US mailing list was in the low end of 200,000, with many duplicates, misspellings, bad addresses, declared SPs, and so on included. {Address Officer ran the mailing lists which were metal "addresso" plates at that time)

[ Webmaster's note, I was there then, and knew Mark Plummer]

My point here is to emphasize that we must never let people pass on the phony inflated numbers that Scn PR has all the news media using. Scn derives much of its power to intimidate from people's mistaken belief that there are "millions" of Scn fanatics out there. Believe me, if there were millions they would be running the planet by now and we'd all be in prison or dead.

May 14, 2003 - British Census Data from 2001 reports only 1,525 in Canada claim "scientology"

Meanwhile, 4.8 million Canadians, including 770,850 Torontonians, claimed to follow no religion in 2001, compared with 3.3 million a decade earlier." Link to original Article HERE

Dianetics Sales drop to 1971 Levels

Plockton posted :
Every once in a while I stumble across a new bit of data on the sales
of Dianetics. From the new site
http://www.scientology.org/en_US/news-media/stats/pg007.html
it appears they've updated the sales figures for Dianetics through
2002 (my last chart was posted 10/02, and I arbitrarily assumed the
data I had for 2002 was through 6/02). Using the new data, the chart
now look like this:

YEAR CUMULATIVE SALES SINCE # OF YEARS AVERAGE SALES
SALES OF LAST REPORT COVERED PER YEAR
DIANETICS DATE IN PERIOD FOR PERIOD

1970 1,375,000 -- 20.5 67,073
1975 2,490,000 1,115,000 5 223,000
1980 4,302,500 1,812,500 5 362,500
1985 7,140,000 2,837,500 5 567,500
1990 13,578,800 6,438,800 5 1,287,760
1992 15,230,708 1,651,908 2 825,954
1997 17,760,000 2,529,292 5 505,858
2002 19,041,000 1,281,000 5 256,200

As before, annual sales of "Dianetics" appears to have fallen to
approximately 1971-75 levels.

Comparing the 1996 and 2001 Australian Census:

And this just in from a reliable source who wishes not to be named:

"in 1995 the official IAS {International Association of Scientologists } figure was 65,000 worldwide"

IAS "GOALS" for 1991 - "Build the membership to 100,000 members" and this quote by Hubbard: "LRH wrote in PAB 74, "The reason we want this membership to be widespread in existence is that the power of an organization is counted by the number of members it has." (source IAS magazine Impact Magazine Issue 33)

On Dec 13, 2002, I sent an email to info@scientology.org asking the following question: "What are current IAS membership stats (in good standing)?" I have not yet received a reply.....
As of Nov 25th 2003, I still have not received a reply.
