from JerryF on ESMB board: One of the big lies spread by Hubbard and David Miscavige was that LRH was the sole source of dianetics and scientology.

The sole-source myth was useful in creating demigod status for Hubbard; an image of a towering genius, an image that could be used to extract obedience, reverence and money.

We have an abundance of documentation and testimony on LRH's plagiarism from sources inside and outside of Dn and Scn. For example:

Why Scientology uses the E-Meter (That is, what Hubbard told you) was a LIE I have found that what is described by Hubbard as "A floatng needle" is what occurrs when a person in in a relaxed trance state - a light state of hypnosis. When the organization does "meter checks" what they are looking for, are those who are waking up from the Scientology trance.

There is much more about the E-meter, and I know that I need to update my e-meter pages, but until that is done, here are few more than illuminating pages.

Endophins and the E-meter

It seems there is evidence that suggests that exposure to the current that the e-meter puts through your body, for sufficient time, causes the level of your own body's endorphins to rise. Endorphins bind at the same receptors as morphine, and cause a sense of well being, they are the body's response to pain and as well it seems, to low level doses electricity. After some time, their absence may cause a craving for more auditing...for more electricity

There is another historical source, who was mentioned by William Sargant, a fellow by the name of John Wesley.. Who was using low level electricity to "cure" people.

"John Wesley (1704-1791) was the eighteenth century English divine who helped to pioneer the use of electricity for the treatment of illness. In 1760 he published The Desideratum, or Electricity made Plain and Useful by a Lover of Mankind and of Common Sense based on his use of electricity in free medical clinics which he had established for the poor in Bristol and London a decade earlier. Although not widely appreciated by either science or medicine, several historians have credited Wesley with being one of the most notable electrotherapists in the eighteenth century and with stimulating nineteenth century developments in psychiatry and general medicine. This essay reviews Wesley's applications of electricity to a wide variety of physical ailments. In the tradition of English parish priests, he combined treatment for illness with spiritual evangelism - a combination which characterized much of the Methodist movement, which Wesley founded. I have also detailed the reactions of physicians during Wesley's time and the theoretical/research developments which occurred after Wesley's death in 1791."

The Psychoanalytic Roots of Scientology by Silas L. Warner, M.D.

The American Academy of Psychoanalysis Presented at the winter meeting, New York City December 12, 1993 This paper explores the interesting relationship between the creator of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986) and his early mentor, a little known psychoanalyst, Joseph Chessman Thompson, M.D. (1876-1943). Thompson taught young Hubbard the theory of psychoanalysis that provided the basic building blocks for Dianetics and Scientology. To understand Scientology's hostile criticism of psychiatry, one must become aware of Hubbard's life history and especially Joseph Thompson's influence on him. http://www.aapsa.org/forum/forum43_1.html#4312

Theta According to Porphyry of Tyros, the Egyptians used an X within a circle as a symbol of the soul; having a value of nine, it was used as a symbol for Ennead. Some history of the Use of Electricity for pain relief
(Alternate Title)
The Answer to the Question used in Scientology Training Routines "DO FISH SWIM?"

The first recorded use of electricity to relieve pain was for a small pool to be formed on the shore line washed with sea water, in it was placed an electric fish called a "Black Torpedo" fish, one was directed to hold ones feet upon the fish.

The following is from:
Electroanalgesia: Historical and Contemporary Developments -
selections from the PhD Thesis of Dr Gordon Gadsby

"The torpedo fish was also well known to the fishermen working off the shores of the Mediterranean, before the birth of Christ, and numbing shocks were ample evidence that a torpedo had been ensnared in their nets. The saving and healing powers of fish were acclaimed throughout the medical and non-medical literature of the early centuries of the Christian era. These beliefs doubtless derived from the ubiquitous fish symbolism of the new religion and its founder, the Fisher of Men (Stillings 1973a)."

"Historians characterize Scribonus as a man of sound judgement and high principles, his sole existing work being the 'Compositiones Medicae'. He confesses that in his quest for remedies he gleaned from every likely person he encountered including slaves and wise women. Indeed he lists the electro-ichthyic remedy for gout on the basis of a report that Anteros, a freedman of Tiberius, had been successfully treated for the disease by this means (Kellaway 1946). After the initial excruciating cramp in his foot had abated, he found to his amazement that the pain he had long suffered, from gutta (gout), was completely banished. This event reached the ears of Scribonius Largus and his commentary appeared as follows."

"For any type of gout a live black torpedo should, when the pain begins, be placed under the feet. The patient must stand on a moist shore washed by the sea (note precautions to keep the torpedo alive) and he should stay like this until his whole foot and leg up to the knee is numb. This takes away present pain and prevents pain from coming on if it has not already arisen. In this way Anteros, a freedman of Tiberius, was cured. (Scribonius CLXII in Schechter 1971)."

Read rest of this article HERE - Electroanalgesia

This gives new meaning to the Scientology Training Routine where you ask your partner "Do Fish Swim?", the answer being "Not when you are standing on an electric one for pain relief"

Also from the same page above: "The history of electricity in general medicine often refers to Claudius Galen's (131-201 AD) early use of shocks from the electrical fish to aid gout and other diseases and is on record as follows: "The whole torpedo, I mean the sea-torpedo, is said by some to cure headache and prolapsus ani when applied. I indeed tried both, and the torpedo should be applied alive to the person who has the headache, and that it could be that this remedy is anodyne and should free the patient from pain as do other remedies which numb the senses: this I found to be so, And I think that he who tried this did so for the above-mentioned reason." (Galen quoted in Stillings 1975/a. "

The best place to hide something is right in front of you!

How long would I have to run a small electric current through your body,
while telling you things that you wanted to hear,
before you were convinced
that I held the secrets to the universe?

Hubbard uses the same occultic techniques used by Crowley and Hitler:

From Chapter 5: "Riffraff into Supermen"

"The nationalist socialists derived power from one source: ...a fanatical autohypnosis which convinced disciples, succumbing to the totalitarian discipline in the promise of reaching transcendent reality, that they were the new men the age was waiting for.. ..that they were endowed with a secret energy which would enable them to take over germany and the world. If they were properly prepared, mysteries would be revealed to them which would give them Satanic powers.."

from Gods and Beasts - The Nazi's and the Occult, by Dusty Sklar (c) 1977 isbn 0-690-01232-2

If you say "Thetan" with a lisp it comes out "SATAN"

Dusty Sklar's 1977 book, God's and Beasts, The Nazi's and the Occult 'black magic' roots of the 'technology' used to control minds in the Nationalist Socialist party machinery. The same roots are painfully obvious to anyone intimately familiar with Scientology, As well the same groups and connected individuals are obvious to even the casual reader. Scientology is based on satanic black magic, the same technology used to build the Third Reich. "From page 24 of Gods and Beasts - the Nazi's and the Occult by Dusty Sklar Pretzsche had introduced Hitler to consciousness-expanding drugs, as well as to astrological and alchemical symbolism. Hitler told Stein that Pretzsche had been present when List tried to materialize "the Incubus" in a ritual designed to create a "Moon Child." ( Hubbard boasts a similar claim, of being involved with a Moonchild ceremony with Satanist Jack Parsons.)

Hermann Rauschning wrote 'Voice of Destruction' Still in print, first published in 1940, about the rise of Adolph Hitler...with snippets of actual dinner table conversations with that occultist madman, it reads much like L Ron Hubbard's policy in many places using some of the exact phrases. A devastating read for anyone conversant with Scientology's mythology

READ: CS Lewis' - The Screwtape Letters

CS Lewis, A Christian Theologian who wrote many stories illustrative of what he considered God's will to be. The screwtape letters series was an attempt to teach judeo-christian principles by contriving the example of a series of letters from a middle level management level member of Satan's demons to one of his minions ons on earth on how to conduct the recruitment of souls for Satan...

"The Screwtape letters likened hell to a bureaucracy in which everyone is perpetually concerned about dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance and resentment." - reminded me of what Scientology is actually like, especially it's management organization - the sea org.

The instructions on how to deceive man, appear to me, upon finally reading CS Lewis's The Screwtape Letters to be one of the major sources, that Hubbard used as a template for the organization that he built.

And regarding the extreme lengths that Hubbard goes to recruit and retain "celebrities"
British Christian Theologan Professor CS Lewis's "Screwtape Proposes a Toast"

"As the great sinners grow fewer, and the majority lose all individuality, the great sinners become far more effective agents for us. Every dictator or even demagogue- almost every film star or crooner--can now draw tens of thousands of the human sheep with him."
"Catch the bellweather, and his whole flock comes after him"

The Screwtape Letters would be useful for helping a departing member of Scientology understand what happened to him.

Title: The Crowd by Gustave Le Bon - "affirmation, repetition, contagion"**
Author: Arnie Lerma
Date: 13 Mar 2000 19:37:17 -0800

This is a teaser from page 112, included with express intent of generating sufficient
interest in a book that L Ron Hubbard may have based the design of Dianetics and Scientology
upon, to move you to acquire and read this. I got my copy at B Dalton's, and I'm settling in this evening
to learn a bit more about just how Ron did it.

The recent posting by Gerry Armstrong describing Hubbard's hypnotic
affirmations, together with the recent release of some research on Hubbard's
Excalibur which mentioned Gustave Le Bon's book as the likely source work
for the abomination so many of us seek to expose, makes this suggested
reading for the enthusiast.

 Arnie Lerma

  Chapter III

The Leaders of crowds and their means of persuasion
1. The Leaders of crowds:
The instinctive need of all beings forming a crowd obey a leader
The psychology of the leaders of crowds
They alone can endow crowds with faith and organize them
The leaders forcibly despotic
Classification of the leaders
The part played by the will

 2. The means of action of the leaders.
Affirmation, repetition, contagion
The respective part of these different factors
The way in which contagion may spread from the lower to upper classes in a society.

 3. Prestige
Definition of prestige and classification of its different kinds.
The masses have never thirsted after truth. They turn aside from evidence that
is not to their taste, preferring to deify error, if error seduce them.

Whomever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whomever
attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim.' P 105

the 1893 [written ] Gustave Le Bon's "The Crowd" describes study tech,

having secret 'levels', using uniforms, use of paintings, busts and statuary,
The use of affirmation, repetition and contagion, all for the programming of the unconscious
mind and I've only read one and 1/2 chapters...

This would be a very disturbing book for Scientologists to read.

They would see themselves, being manipulated by a Master of Deception

The Scientology Tone Scale

It teaches wanna-be scientologists that human emotions are bad... by mixing in what Id describe as sociopathic conduct (covert hostility).

Imagine having a loved one die and feeling GUILTY because one CRIED? - dared to express grief ?!

The "Tone Scale" is, like the rest of scientology, a manipulation tool.

It covertly, by implication, teaches Scientologists how to act like an "OT"... MORE on the TONE SCALE HERE

PLEASE READ and learn to think with Gustave Le Bon's "The Crowd" available on Line

from Gustave Le Bon , from {chapter 8} of his The Psychology of Revolution

http://www.worldwideschool.com/library/books/socl/politicalscience/ThePsychologyofRevolution/chap8.html

"I have shown elsewhere, making use of certain physiological experiments, that the unconscious collective mind of the crowd seems bound up with the mind of the leader. The latter gives it a single will and imposes absolute obedience.

The leader acts especially through suggestion. His success depends on his fashion of provoking this suggestion. Many experiments have shown to what point a collectivity may be subjected to suggestion.[6]

[6] Among the numerous experiments made to prove this fact one of the most remarkable was performed on the pupils of his class by Professor Glosson and published in the Revue Scientifique for October 28, 1899.

``I prepared a bottle filled with distilled water carefully wrapped in cotton and packed in a box. After several other experiments I stated that I wished to measure the rapidity with which an odour would diffuse itself through the air, and asked those present to raise their hands the moment they perceived the odour. . . . I took out the bottle and poured the water on the cotton, turning my head away during the operation, then took up a stop-watch and awaited the result. . . . I explained that I was absolutely sure that no one present had ever smelt the odour of the chemical composition I had spilt. . . . At the end of fifteen seconds the majority of those in front had held up their hands, and in forty seconds the odour had reached the back of the hall by fairly regular waves. About three-quarters of those present declared that they perceived the odour. A larger number would doubtless have succumbed to suggestion, if at the end of a minute I had not been forced to stop the experiment, some of those in the front rows being unpleasantly affected by the odour, and wishing to leave the hall.''

According to the suggestions of the leaders, the multitude will be calm, furious, criminal, or heroic. These various suggestions may sometimes appear to present a rational aspect, but they will only appear to be reasonable. A crowd is in reality inaccessible to reason; the only ideas capable of influencing it will always be sentiments evoked in the form of images. "

From a recent departee from the Sea Organizaton

Hi Arnie,

This is also something I stumbled across that pretty much was the icing on
the cake:

"The law of auto-suggestion, through which any person may rise to
altitudes of achievement which stagger the imagination, is well
described in the following verse":

"If you think you are beaten, you are, If you think you dare not, you
don't If you like to win, but you think you can't, It is almost certain
you won't.

"If you think you'll lose, you're lost For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow's will- It's all in a state of mind.

"If you think you are outclassed, you are, You've got to think high to
rise, You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize.

"Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man, But soon
or late the man who wins Is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN!"

"Observe the words which have been emphasized, and you will catch the
deep meaning which the poet had in mind."

Check in the Technique 80 final lectures, where LRH says "I wrote [it]...".   In
Scientology's current  "State of Mind CD" someone must have caught them on it as it now says Ron

it appeared in a book called "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill in 1937.
