On The Factors
Introduction
I was involved in Scientology ® or well over two decades without the
slightest clue of Hubbard's occult background or of the specific
occult sources from which he drew to develop and arrange his
"scientific system". There is no comparative occult study provided for
in Scientology, and for all I knew, Hubbard's scientific
qualifications and background were as he asserted them to be, and that
his study of the mind and spirit culminated in a humanitarian effort
of the highest magnitude and yes, even gift to mankind. There was most
certainly no hint whatsoever of any occult underpinnings in the
courses that I studied while in Scientology.
I want to point out that I am not an accomplished student of the
occult or of the inner mystical teaching of Judaism called the
Cabala/Qabala/Qabalah. Although I cite several other books on this
subject, as a primer I was most helped by Z'ev ben Shimon Halevi's
book Introduction to the Cabala Tree of Life. I have used the spelling
"Qabala" in this paper.
My purpose here is simply to introduce a comparison between the Qabala
and Scientology's underlying philosophy as given in the Factors. I
have tried to communicate my understanding of that occult system in
the barest of terms I found necessary to make the comparison.
The Factors, a fundamental statement of Hubbard's philosophy, is a
fraudulent and blasphemous theft of ancient Qabalistic concepts and of
Aleister Crowley's work in particular. [i]
I apologize in advance for any insensitivity in its writing and for
the possible blasphemous nature of this account.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[i]Charles Stanton Jones, aka Frater Achad, was another magician who
figured strongly in Crowley's qabalistic studies. At this writing I am
not sufficiently informed to make the distinction between Crowley's
qabalistic work and that of Frater Achad. A brief look at Frater
Achad's writings, however offers an intriguing promise for further
comparisons.

The Scientology Factors are a fundamental statement of the philosophy
of Scientology. In the Factors Hubbard ® gives his philosophical basis
for the descent of theta from godhood into matter. The Factors are
webbed in full at www.bonafidescientology.org.
Hubbard prefaced the Factors as follows: Summation of the
considerations and examinations of the human spirit and the material
universe completed between 1923 and 1953 A.D. No reference was ever
given by Hubbard as to his source of his considerations or what
examinations he conducted that allowed him to distill the mysteries of
the universe into this concise document. He signed the Factors as
follows: Humbly tendered as a gift to man by L. Ron Hubbard ®, 23
April 1953".[1]
However, in a lecture given five months before the Factors were
published, Hubbard spoke at length about these considerations:
<start quote>
A magician--the magic cults of the eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh,
twelfth centuries in the Middle East were fascinating. The only
modern work that has anything to do with them is a trifle wild in
spots, but it's fascinating work in itself, and that's work written by
Aleister Crowley, the late Aleister Crowley, my very good friend. And
he did himself a splendid piece of aesthetics built around those magic
cults. It's very interesting reading to get a hold of a copy of a
book, quite rare, but it can be obtained, The Master Therion,
T-h-e-r-i-o-n, The Master Therion by Aleister Crowley. He signs
himself "The Beast"; "The Mark of the Beast, 666." Very, very
something or other.
But anyway, the--Crowley exhumed a lot of the data from these old
magic cults. And he, as a matter of fact handles cause and effect
quite a bit. Cause and effect is handled according to a ritual. And
it's interesting that whenever you have any of these things you can
always assign a ritual to it and that ritual is what you do in order
to accomplish this, or how you have to go through and how many motions
you have to make to come into the ownership of that. And that's a
ritual. Or how many motions or words you have to say in order to be
something else. Now that's a ritual. And that is a--each ritual is a
cycle of something or other.
Now you can have cycles that start low and end high. But because Homo
Sapiens has agreed to a cycle that starts with space and ends with
matter, when Homo sapiens starts into a cycle of action he finds
himself up with his hands full of gold and with shackles on every
limb.[2]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Not surprisingly, Aleister Crowley had a lot to say about this very
subject, and his research is well documented as to sources.
The Factors and their Origins
Crowley took secret teachings of a Rosicrucian Order called The Golden
Dawn and published some of this doctrine in THE EQUINOX, an action
that earned him some criticism in certain occult circles. Crowley
lightly edited those same teachings and incorporated them into a new
training system for magicians, called the A . . .A . . ..
<start quote>
One of the two founders, the better known, and ultimately the more
influential, was Aleister Crowley (né Edward Alexander Crowley). Born
in England and raised by Christian Fundamentalist parents, his
lifepath was altered forever by a seemingly spontaneous experience of
cosmic consciousness at age 21 in December 1896. He received
initiation into Isis-Urania Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden
Dawn on November 18, 1898 and into its Second Order (as an Adeptus
Minor) on January 23, 1900. He became a pawn--something of a
centerpiece around which warring factions circled--during the revolt
within the Order that erupted in 1900.
[...] In March 1909, Crowley published the first issue of THE EQUINOX,
a large, hardcover periodical (about 400 pages per issue) which came
out twice each year for a five-year period (1909 - 1913). It described
itself, on its title page as "The Official Organ of the A . . .A . . .
- The Review of Scientific Illuminism." Its motto was "The Method of
Science - The Aim of Religion." [3]
--James A. Eshelman
<end quote>
<start quote>
Having attained the requisite degree of initiation, from 1906 to 1909
Crowley worked with his former Golden Dawn mentor George Cecil Jones
(formerly Fra. V.N. but now Fra. D.D.S.) to fully elaborate the
initiatory system of the A . . .A . . ..
In developing the A . . .A . . . curriculum, Crowley adopted some G.D.
[Golden Dawn] teachings with little or no modification. He accepted
the essential Qabala as taught in the G.D. but greatly extended its
scope. While many of the tables of correspondences in the Qabalistic
reference work Liber 777 derived from G.D. sources, Crowley greatly
amplified the work and extended the system to classify comparative
religious data. Crowley taught the G.D. Tarot for decades but later
produced a reformation--The Book of Thoth (1944) -- in which basic
attributions were changed and the G.D. designs are but dimly visible.
With the Enochian system of John Dee and Edward Kelley he surpassed
the G.D.'s teachings by making a thorough study of the original
sources. [4]

Magick Book 4
<end quote>
I found some curious correspondence between Aleister Crowley's
biographical sketch and that of Hubbard's own history, which I'll
mention briefly. One of the main sources of Aleister Crowley's
teachings was a magician named Éliphas Lévi (1810-1875).
<start quote>
Crowley considered the year 1875 especially significant for three
interconnected reasons: it was the year of Éliphas Lévi's death, his
own birth, and the year in which the Theosophical Society was founded.
Crowley was born in England six months after Lévi's death in France,
and he believed from an early stage in his career that Lévi was his
previous incarnation.
Éliphas Lévi was probably the first truly modern writer on magick. His
works were a departure from the grimoires and compendia that had
dominated European magical literature since medieval times. Lévi
developed a theoretical basis for magical phenomena, and attempted to
reconcile magick with both science and faith in God. Giordano Bruno
did much the same in his day, but where Bruno defended his nascent
science from hostile religious authority, Lévi was defending magick
from the new orthodoxy of science. [5]

Hubbard professed, not to be the reincarnation of a famous magician,
but that of Metteyya himself (a name for the Buddhist Messiah.) Study
of Crowley's works revealed that Crowley's yoga instructor was a
Buddhist monk named Ananda Metteyya. Hubbard's Dianetics ® time track
theory was obviously lifted from Ananda Metteyya's "Magical Memory".

Hubbard made an attempt in 1953 to covertly align Scientology with The
Golden Dawn, and came out with a publication with that name. Although
the publication did not survive a second issue, the Golden Dawn
masthead and main article is published in Scientology's technical
volumes.
The current Scientology training system is known as The Golden Age of
Tech ® . I have no information to suggest that there is a mutually
acknowledged kinship between Scientology and the Golden Dawn. However,
Scientology's symbolism and rhetoric for their new training system
clearly intends to portray Scientology's affinities with the Golden
Dawn. [6]
Aleister Crowley's life ended tragically, he was reportedly a heroin
addict and hopelessly insane. Hubbard's life ended in a similar
way--critics have documented the circumstances of his death
elsewhere--he was psychologically unstable and under a medication
called Vistaril.
The Tree of Life
<start quote>
The Tree of Life is a map of the aspects of human consciousness. As
such, it becomes a "filing cabinet" or pattern for categorization, of
all things that can be perceived by us. Therefore, it is a "map of the
universe;" that is, the interrelationship of all things can be
demonstrated on this diagram, by one who has practical familiarity
with it.
Because it is a categorical map of human consciousness (the universe
"within" us) and, at the same time, of all things knowable by us in
our world (the universe "outside" of us), the Tree of Life also serves
as the perfect scheme for plotting the stages of progressive
initiation; that is, of progressive unfoldment of aspects of expanded
consciousness. [7]
--James A. Eshelman
<end quote>
Crowley's explanation of the Qabalistic Tree of Life is succinctly
outlined in a work called The Naples Arrangement, named after the
Egyptian city in which he carried out this magical research. In The
Naples Arrangement, Crowley described how the point, line and plane
evolve into time, space and energy and matter. [8]

The Qabalistic Tree of Life is represented here with the Serpent of
Wisdom, whose body is entwined throughout the diagram to portray the
descent of God into the physical. The top circle represents "The Crown
of God, or Kether. The bottom circle is Malkuth, for The Earth. The
circles themselves are called Sephiroth; they represent various
characteristics of consciousness. The paths between each Sephira are
spiritual paths that mankind takes on his way back towards God.
The A . . .A . . .is a training system for magicians that was co
founded by Aleister Crowley and George Cecil Jones. This system
utilizes the tremendously important Tree of Life.
Scientology ® portrays this serpent in the Scientology symbol ®.
In the Holy Qabala, there are three sectors outside the Tree of Life
proper, which are aspects of Negative Existence.
The Tree of Life begins with Kether.
[10] <image>
In this diagram, AIN is represented with 000, AIN SOPH is 00, and AIN
SOPH AUR is 0.
Kether is the top circle in the pattern of connected circles.
In certain Qabalistic systems a study is made of an eleventh Sephira,
known as Daäth. Most commonly, it is referred to as a hidden Sephira,
as it functions only in certain circumstances. Daäth means Knowledge
or Higher Knowledge.
<start quote>
It is evident that no human being, however advanced he may be towards
the attainment of cosmic consciousness, can transcend Kether and
explore the trans-plutonic <i> voids, either in the outer spaces of
the physical universe or in the inner spaces of his own inscrutable
individuality. To do so would imply that he had quitted altogether,
perhaps to become one with God, for whatever that term may mean the
state which it implies can have no possible meaning within the
framework of dualistic experience, and is therefore without the scope
of the present enquiry.
As if to compensate for this forbidden journey, however, the Tree
provides a single loophole through which the human will may project
itself, and it is this 'hole in space' that forms the outer pylon
hidden in the abyss of consciousness (the Unconscious) [...]. To go
astray in this Desert of Set <ii> is to become what is known as a
Black Brother <iii>. [...]
The name given by qabalists to this Gate of the Gulf is Daäth [...].
The word Daäth instantly suggests the name of that other gateway which
opens upon the void of personal extinction, i.e., Death. [11]

<start quote>
Scientology, 1. it is formed from the Latin word scio, which means
know or distinguish, being related to the word scindo, which means
cleave. (Thus, the idea of differentiation is strongly implied.) It is
formed from the Greek word logos, which means THE WORD, or OUTWARD
FORM BY WHICH THE INWARD THOUGHT IS EXPRESSED AND MADE KNOWN: also THE
INWARD THOUGHT OR REASON ITSELF. Thus, SCIENTOLOGY means KNOWING ABOUT
KNOWING, or SCIENCE OF KNOWLEDGE. (Scn 8-80, p. 8) 2. Scientology
addresses the thetan. Scientology is used to increase spiritual
freedom, intelligence, ability, and to produce immortality. (HCOB 2
Apr 69) 3. SCIENTOLOGY is further redefined as THE STUDY AND HANDLING
OF THE SPIRIT IN RELATIONSHIP TO ITSELF, UNIVERSES AND OTHER LIFE
(HCOPL 20 Sept 81) 4. an organized body of scientific research
knowledge concerning life, life sources and the mind and includes
practices that improve the intelligence, state and conduct of persons.
(HCOB 9 Jul 59) 5. a religious philosophy in its highest meaning as it
brings man to total freedom and truth. (HCOB 18 Apr 67) 6. the science
of knowing how to know answers. It is a wisdom in the tradition of ten
thousand years of search in Asia and Western civilization. It is the
science of human affairs which treats the livingness and beingness of
man, and demonstrates to him a pathway to greater freedom. (COHA p. 9)
7. an organization of the pertinences which are mutually held true by
all men in all times, and the development of technologies which
demonstrate the existence of new phenomena not hitherto known, which
are useful in creating states of beingness of man, considered more
desirable by man. (COHA p. 9) 8. the science of knowing how to know.
It is the science of knowing sciences. It seeks to embrace the
sciences and humanities as a clarification of knowledge itself. Into
all these things-biology, physics, psychology and life itself-the
skills of Scientology can bring order and simplification. (Scn 8-8008,
p. 11) 9. the study of the human spirit in its relationship to the
physical universe and its living forms. (Abil 146) 10. a science of
life. It is the one thing senior to life because it handles all the
factors of life. It contains the data necessary to live as a free
being. A reality in Scientology is a reality on life. (Aud 27 UK) 11.
a body of knowledge which, when properly used, gives freedom and truth
to the individual. (COHA p. 251) 12. knowledge and its application in
the conquest of the material universe. (HCL 1, 5203CM 03A) 13. an
applied philosophy designed and developed to make the able more able.
In this sphere it is tremendously successful. (HCO PL 27 Oct 64) 14.
an applied religious philosophy dealing with the study of knowledge,
which through the application of its technology, can bring about
desirable changes in the conditions of life. (HCO PL 15 Apr 71R) [12]

Scientology promotes that it is a system of "knowing how to know." In
the light of the earlier definition and description of the Sephira of
Daäth, however, a picture begins to emerge. That picture is far
different from the PR image that Hubbard and Scientology have painted.

Hubbard ® joined the Boy Scouts of America (April)
Hubbard met Commander Joseph "Snake" Thompson (November)

<start quote>
One must begin, as a mathematician would, with the idea of Zero,
Absolute Zero, which turns out on examination to mean any quantity
that one may choose, but not, as the layman at first may suppose,
Nothing, in the "absence-of-anything" vulgar sense of the word. [...]
[15]
--Aleister Crowley
<end quote>
Crowley's Absolute Zero is Scientology's Eighth Dynamic.
<start quote>
THE EIGHTH DYNAMICis the urge toward existence as infinity. This is
also identified as the Supreme Being. It is carefully observed here
that the science <sic> of Scientology does not intrude into the
dynamic of the Supreme Being. [16]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
One of Scientology's fundamental psychological tools is contained in
Science of Survival. This basic Dianetics text teaches how to predict
other's behavior by evaluation of their emotional state(s). Science of
Survival is based upon a chart called the Hubbard Chart of Human
Evaluation and Dianetic Processing. This chart is a list of emotions
arranged in descending order of positivity; against that list is
plotted various psychological, moral and physiological
characteristics.
[17] <image>
This diagram is a partial representation of the Hubbard Chart of
Human Evaluation and Dianetic Processing--Part 2.
The Free Theta column represents that part of the "thetan" which is
not mired down by the reactive mind.
At the top of the scale is a value of 1000. This correlates with the
emotional tone of "Serenity of Beingness" or "Tone 40".
(Compare with AIN: 000)
At 100, we have the MEST CLEAR. This is the Clear defined in Dianetics
Modern Science of Mental Health.
Compare with AIN SOPH: 00)
Between MEST CLEAR and the top of the scale is the range of the
THETA-MEST CLEAR, which is loosely synonymous with OPERATING THETAN--
a relative state claimed at the upper reaches of Scientology's Bridge
® .
At 0 (death) we again have theta "out of contact".
(Compare with AIN SOPH AUR: 0)
These numeric figures represent a relative degree of "godness" in any
human. [18]
There is also an expanded "Emotional Tone Scale" in Scientology ® that
includes the emotional range of a thetan "below death". The range of
theta below death is the province and subject matter of Scientology's
advanced levels, wherein an address is made of parasitic,
quasi-autonomous entities Hubbard called "body thetans".
View Scientology's expanded tone scale. [19]
At every state of human existence, there is a relative quantity of
"free theta" as well as a quantity of manifested "reactivity" or
engramic content. Hubbard claimed that his Dianetics ® technology
erases the engramic content, thus restoring to the thetan the quantity
of life force that had been locked up in the engramic content.
The cumulative effect of Dianetics auditing is known as "negative case
gain"-- by erasing engramic content, the thetan supposedly restores
more of his "free theta."
<start quote>
2. In the beginning and forever is the decision and the decision is TO
BE. [...][20]
--L. Ron Hubbard
The Factors
<end quote>
In Scientology to be is the first condition of existence. Hubbard
defined beingness as the result of having assumed an identity. [21]
Thus, from the omnipotent perspective of Kether, or Operating Thetan ®
, the only requirement is to decide to be that identity.
<start quote>
The Qabalists expanded on this idea of Nothing, and got a second kind
of Nothing which they called "Ain Soph"--"Without Limit'. (This idea
seems not unlike that of Space.) They then decided that in order to
interpret this mere absence of any means of definition, it was
necessary to postulate the Ain Soph Aur--"Limitless Light". By this
they seem to have meant very much what the late Victorian men of
science meant, or thought they meant, by the Luminous Ether.
(Space-Time Continuum?)
All this is evidently without form and void; these are abstract
conditions, not positive ideas. The next step would be Position. One
must formulate this thesis: If there is anything except Nothing, it
must exist within this Boundless Light; within this Space; within this
inconceivable Nothingness, which cannot exist as Nothingness but has
to be conceived of as a Nothingness composed of the annihilation of
two imaginary opposites. Thus appears The Point, which has "neither
parts nor magnitude, but only position." [22]
--Aleister Crowley
<end quote>
Kether is the beginning of the relative universe. In Crowley's "The
Naples Arrangement, Kether is the point. In Scientology, that point is
called a viewpoint.
<start quote>
VIEWPOINT, 1. a point of awareness from which one can perceive. (PAB
2) 2. that thing which an individual puts out remotely, to look
through. A system of remote lookingness--we'll call it just remote
viewpoint. That's a specialized kind of viewpoint. And the place from
which the individual is himself looking, we'll call flatly a
viewpoint. (2ACC 17A, 5312CM07) 3. evaluation is the reactive mind's
conception of viewpoint. The reactive mind does not perceive, it
evaluates. To the analytical mind it may sometimes appear that the
reactive mind has a viewpoint. The reactive mind does not have a
viewpoint, it has an evaluation of viewpoint. Thus the viewpoint of
the analytical mind is an actual point from which one perceives.
Perception is done by sight, sound, smell, tactile, etc. The reactive
mind's 'viewpoint' is an opinion based on another opinion and upon a
very small amount of observation, and that observation would be formed
out of uncertainties. Thus the confusion of the word viewpoint itself.
It can be a point from which one can be aware, which is its analytical
definition, and it can be somebody's ideas on a certain subject which
is the reactive definition. (COHA pp. 208-209) [23]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Here Hubbard distinguishes between conscious and unconscious
viewpoints. "Unconscious viewpoints" come from the reactive mind,
whereas conscious viewpoints obtained by observation are a function of
the analytical (conscious) mind, or thetan. At advanced levels of
Scientology, Hubbard called these unconscious viewpoints body thetans,
or autonomous entities that are exorcised using Hubbard's
pseudo-psychological processes at the upper Scientology levels. At
lower levels, the unconscious viewpoints are an aspect of engramic
content called valences, or false identities. Erasing the engramic
content supposedly also relieves the individual of unconscious
dramatization of the valences embodied within them.
In definition 2 above, we see the idea of remote looking, as through a
projection or body thetan. Here also we see the beginnings of
Hubbard's indoctrination of evaluation as a function of an inferior
aspect of the mind. I'll come back to these concepts a little later.
<start quote>
CONDITIONS OF EXISTENCE, there are three conditions of existence.
These three conditions comprise life. They are BE, DO and HAVE. The
condition of being is defined as the assumption (choosing) of a
category of identity. An example of beingness could be one's own name.
Another example would be one's profession. [...] (FOT, pp 26-27) [24]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
In Jungian psychology, identity is an aspect of the psyche called the
persona. The persona is how one appears to oneself and to the world.
It is not the real "I" of the individual, nor does it represent all
factors of the psyche. [25] Whereas the ego is the center of
consciousness in an individual, the persona is the mask that an
individual adopts for his various life functions.
<start quote>
3. The first action of beingness is to assume a viewpoint.
4. The second action of beingness is to extend from the viewpoint,
points to view, which are dimension points. [26]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
In Hubbard's version, first we have the decision of the god to be, and
then the god's action of assuming a beingness or identity. In other
words, the god identifies himself with an object and thus creates
space.
We have here Hubbard's idea of intention as "the degree of relative
beingness one desires to assume as plotted on the tone scale." [27]
The higher toned one is emotionally, the greater the degree of
beingness possible. The tone scale is the relative scale of godhood.
The ideal in Scientology is that one can choose to BE anything.
Indeed, according to Hubbard's OT Maxims:
<start quote>
THE POWER OF A THETAN (defined as light-year kilotons per microsecond)
IS MEASURED BY NOTHING ELSE THAN THE DISTANCE (defined as spherical
spatial length) AROUND HIM IN HIS ENVIRONMENT THAT HE CAN CONTROL.
[28]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
See also:
The ARC Triangle
The KRC Triangle
http://www.aiur.org/caroline/papers.html
Obviously, godhood in Scientology directly relates to the ego
(individual center of consciousness) and the persona or personae.
In The Naples Arrangement, the line is the second step of the Tree of
Life.
<start quote>
But position does not mean anything at all unless there is something
else, some other position with which it can be compared. One has to
describe it. The only way to do this is to have another Point, and
that means that one must invent the number Two, making possible The
Line. [29]
--Aleister Crowley
<end quote>
Correlating Crowley's arrangement with that of Hubbard's, the initial
point is the viewpoint, and the number two is the dimension point. In
Scientology, this line is generally called the communication line
between the subject (number one) and the object (number two).
<start quote>
5. Thus there is space created, for the definition of space is:
viewpoint of dimension. And the purpose of a dimension point is space
and a point of view. [...][30]
--L. Ron Hubbard ®
<end quote>
Note it is the viewpoint that is the causal factor, and that the
viewpoint creates space by extending dimension points. Thus begins the
hierarchial arrangement between viewpoint and dimension point.
<start quote>
BEINGNESS, 1. the result of having assumed an identity. (LRH Def.
Notes) 2. in terms of human experience, beingness is space. Space is a
viewpoint of dimension. The points which mark an area of space are
called anchor points, and these, with the viewpoint, alone are
responsible for space. The creation of anchor points, then, is the
creation of space, which is, in itself, the creation of beingness. The
essential in any object is the space which it occupies. Thus, the
ability to be an object first depends upon the ability to be the space
which it occupies. (Scn Jour 14-G) 3. essentially, an identification
of self with an object. (COHA, p 76.) [31]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Crowley pointed out that two points do not make other than a line,
that a plane must contain at least three points, and that it requires
at least four points to have a solid.
<start quote>
6. The action of a dimension point is reaching and withdrawing.
7. And from the viewpoint to the dimension points there are connection
and interchange. Thus new dimension points are made. Thus there is
communication.
8. And thus there is light.
9. And thus there is energy.
10. And thus there is life.
11. But there are other viewpoints and these viewpoints outthrust
points to view. And there comes about an interchange amongst
viewpoints; but the interchange is never otherwise than in terms of
exchanging dimension points.
12. The dimension point can be moved by the viewpoint, for the
viewpoint, in addition to creative ability and consideration,
possesses volition and potential independence of action; and the
viewpoint, viewing dimension points, can change in relation to its own
or other dimension points or viewpoints. Thus comes about all the
fundamentals there are to motion.
13. The dimension points are each and every one, whether large or
small, solid. And they are solid solely because the viewpoints say
they are solid. [...][32]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Hubbard's Factors do not specify the required minimum number of points
for a plane or a solid. As can be seen in the Factors above, he states
that the dimension points themselves are solid solely because the
viewpoint says they are solid. (However interesting, it is not my
intention here to mathematically rectify Hubbard's Factors, but more
to point out the obvious similarities with the Naples Arrangement and
in passing comment upon possible anomalies in Hubbard's "scientific
statement of the Universe.")
The viewpoint's edict notwithstanding, Hubbard specifies that the
dimension points are themselves solid. Thus, we must assume that a
dimension point, on being extended, has at least four points.
Elsewhere Hubbard ® stated that viewpoints exchange "creative
pictures" which, as they become more complex in form take on the
aspect of a life of their own and become animated beings." [33]
The action of physical universe life in Hubbard's model involves a
distinction in the individual between viewpoint and the dimension
points s/he extends, or at least an assignment of secondary
identity(ies) to the dimension points extended. Hubbard is also clear
on the hierarchical relationship between the viewpoint and dimension
points (ref. 12 and 13 above.)
<start quote>
14. Many dimension points combine into larger gases, fluids or solids.
Thus there is matter. But the most valued point is admiration, and
admiration is so strong its absence alone permits persistence.
15. The dimension point can be different from other dimension points
and thus can possess an individual quality. And many dimension points
can possess a similar quality, and others can possess a similar
quality unto themselves. Thus comes about the quality of classes of
matter.
16. The viewpoint can combine dimension points into forms and the
forms can be simple or complex and can be at different distances from
the viewpoints and so there can be combinations of form. And the forms
are capable of motion and the viewpoints are capable of motion and so
there can be motion of forms. [...][34]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
From Factor 6 forward, Hubbard is clearly describing the MEST (Matter,
energy, space and time) Universe.
In Crowley's arrangement, the Abyss is the material world. It is
geometrically represented by the introduction of the fourth point,
which makes the solid. Motion and Time are also included as features
of the Abyss.
The Abyss is represented in the Tree of Life as the hidden Sephira of
Daäth.
Crossing The Abyss
As previously stated the Naples Arrangement defines the Abyss as the
material world. It is a world of solids, motion, space and time. This
corresponds with Hubbard's MEST Universe (Matter, Energy, Space and
Time). The concept of MEST will unfold further as we go.

Hubbard ® claimed to have distilled the common denominator of
existence down to one word: "Survive!" Such an accomplishment is a
necessary requirement for the OTO's grade of Magus.
See: Excalibur and the Scientology Cross.
Survival in Scientology ® is an ongoing consideration that gets
carried forward in time. A thetan is not so burdened by endurance, as
he knows that he is ultimately a god, outside of time and in fact
immortal. The Bridge ® that Hubbard sells is the Bridge that takes a
person from "mere survival" to immortality, as a god.
® [36] <image>
Hubbard obviously interpreted the abyss to be the reactive mind, and
promoted his Dianetics ® as the scientific method by which people
could progress toward the ultimate goal of Operating Thetan ® (OT ®),
which we can now relate to Kether or "The Crown."

The crossing of the Abyss in occult philosophy relates to the chthonic
realm of demons, or the underworld. These demons are evoked (banished)
by a type of ritual magick known as The Goetia. [37]
A little later I'll talk more about how the Goetia relates to the
advanced levels of Scientology. First, to bring this subject matter
into what may be a more familiar framework:
<start quote>
One may best understand the function of Magical Evocation within
Rosicrucian Magic from a psychological perspective. Modern psychology
offers the Magician important insight into processes known to
Theurgists for thousands of years. The notion of the Unconscious, an
aspect of the psyche lying beneath the threshold of conscious
awareness, provides new insight into the nature of the Entities
previously understood as Demons. Israel Regardie suggested that: "The
term 'complex' has achieved a fairly wide notoriety during the last
quarter century since the circulation of the ideas of Freud and Jung.
It means an aggregation or group of ideas in the mind with a strong
emotional charge, capable of affecting conscious thought and
behavior." Living in the dark realm beyond the light of consciousness,
the complexes enjoy a sort of semi-autonomy within the psyche.
Whether the Magical Forces, Angels, and Demons exist objectively or
rather merely subjectively within the psyche of the Magician is an
epistemological question that goes beyond the scope of the present
discussion. For practical purposes, it is quite useful to consider the
Forces at times as though they were objective and in other instances
to treat them as they were purely subjective psychic contents of the
Magician. [38]
--David Griffin
<end quote>
In keeping with his propaganda strategies, Hubbard redefined both
psychological and occult ideas for use in his system. At the lower
levels of the Scientology Bridge ® , the phenomena just described is
addressed in Dianetics ® from a psychological perspective of
complexes. However, the advanced levels deal with the same phenomena
as literal autonomous entities.
<start quote>
It is the purpose of Dianetics to pass man across *the abyss*
<emphasis added> of irrational, solely reactive thought and enter him
upon a new stage of constructive progression to the ultimate goal.
[39]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
About Complexes
A complex is emotionally charged content in the mind that is to a
greater or lesser degree unconscious. Carl Jung defined a complex
while recounting the results of a word association experiment:
<start quote>
(Referring to a story of an unhappy love affair)...Such a
recollection, which is composed of a large number of component ideas,
is called a complex of ideas. The cement that holds the complex
together is the feeling-tone common to all the individual ideas [12],
in this case unhappiness. We are therefore speaking of a feeling-toned
complex of ideas, or simply of a complex. In our case the complex has
the effect that the subject does not react by arbitrary or random
connections of words but derives most of his reactions from the
complex. The influence of the complex on thinking and behavior is
called a constellation.
The reactions of our subject are thus constellated by a complex.
[12] This term is a pleonasm, because there are no complexes of ideas
other than emotionally charged ones. The stronger the complex is, the
more vivid an emotional tone one has to infer. [40]
--Carl G. Jung
<end quote>
Dianetics Below Clear
Hubbard redefined common psychological and occult terms when he
formulated his new "science." Despite all appearances to the contrary,
Hubbard's Bridge addresses the phenomena described above from both
psychological and occult perspectives.
At lower levels, Dianetics addresses the mind within a
quasi-psychological framework. The same phenomena that psychologists
would term a complex are addressed in Dianetics as engrams. This is an
over-simplified statement; Hubbard's model for the mind and psyche
does not correspond to any model I know of in modern psychology. (I
will try to clarify some of the differences as I go.) Nevertheless,
function and behavior of engramic content translates to its
counterpart in psychology--the complex.
Engram-running with Dianetics eventually results in Clear, which is a
person who has erased the entire content of his own reactive mind.
<start quote>
A CLEAR IS A BEING WHO NO LONGER HAS HIS OWN REACTIVE MIND. [41]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
The person will at that point have a realization something along the
lines of "I'm mocking up [creating] my reactive mind" at which point
he is no longer run on Dianetics as above.
See how Scientology describes the state of Clear.
See also: Scientology's statement of the attributes of clear.

Health
Dianetics at Advanced Levels
At Scientology's advanced levels of OT ® 3 and above, Hubbard
reindoctrinates his subjects to view and address the same psychic
content as literal autonomous entities. Where one thought of an engram
to describe unconscious psychic content, now the person views that
engram as the reactive content belonging to literal parasitic entities
that are attached to the spirit or to the body.
The occult demon is defined in Scientology as a "body thetan."
Sometimes a number of body thetans get stuck together in small or
large groups. A group of body thetans is called a cluster. Hubbard
taught that these body thetans are stuck to each other and to the
Scientologist and that the glue that keeps them together is a
characteristic of their mutually experienced engramic content.
According to Hubbard, the psychology of body thetans is exactly the
same as that of Scientologist to whom they attached. They are simply
worse off.
At the level of OT 3 and above, auditing consists of ridding oneself
of these BTs and clusters by auditing the BTs and clusters on their
engramic content. A person at Clear attests to no longer having his
own reactive mind. Any reactivity manifesting in a Clear is therefore
taught as being separate from him--the reactive minds of his BTs and
clusters are the source of any unwanted condition of the Clear.
Auditing at advanced levels are quasi-clearing techniques of the BTs
and clusters. Once their reactivity is addressed, they supposedly
depart from their host.
See Dianetics: Sci Fi Freemasonry for a discussion of the engram that
is audited at OT 3.
http://www.aiur.org/caroline/papers.html
<start quote>
19. And the viewpoint can never perish; but the form can perish.
[...][42]
--L. Ron Hubbard ®
<end quote>
Factor 19 introduces the concept of duality and sharply discriminates
between the viewpoint and the complex dimension point--the form. Here
we also see the concept of the form as degraded theta. The
indoctrinated scientific reality at NOTs ® is that the body is
literally a form composed of degraded thetans that must be exorcised
in order to achieve spiritual freedom and sovereignty as an OT ®
(god).
<start quote>
20. And the many viewpoints, interacting, become dependent upon one
anothers forms and do not choose to distinguish completely the
ownership of dimension points and so comes about a dependency upon the
dimension points and upon the other viewpoints. [...][43]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
The above Factor relates to the stupidity characterized by the
misownership and misidentification among BTs and their hosts. This is
the specific address of New Era Dianetics ® for OTs. At NOTs level,
BTs and clusters are telepathically asked questions designed to sort
out their identities. In doing so, the BTs supposedly differentiate
between their true selves and the engramic content of their unique
reactive minds. This is the function of the NOTs process--when applied
to the indoctrinated advanced level Scientologist, it causes the
apparency that the BTs have left their host.
Earlier, at the level of OT 3, the BTs are contacted and made to run
through a specific devastating engram, called the OT 3 incident.
Hubbard provided the exact story for this incident and mandated that
the Scientologist telepathically intend their BTs through the exact
sequence of that incident.
The BTs who are addressed at OT 3 are more "awake" and are in a good
enough psychological condition where they can be run on this engram.
The BTs addressed in later levels often have to be "woken up" before
being audited. This is done by repetitively saying "Hello" to them,
and getting them to say "Hello" back to the host. They must then work
out what they are and who they are. After attesting to completion of
OT 3 and OT 4, the NOTs process replaces the OT 3 process.
<start quote>
21. From this comes a consistency of viewpoint of the interaction of
dimension points and this, regulated, is time.
22. And there are universes.
23. The universes, then, are three in number: the universe created by
one viewpoint, the universe created by every other viewpoint, the
universe created by the mutual action of viewpoints which is agreed to
be upheld the physical universe. [...][44]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Hubbard ® "revealed" at advanced levels that the material universe is
a complex arrangement of encysted thetans in such incredibly degraded
states that they manifest as material objects. The uniformity of their
reactive minds is supposedly the factual cause of time itself.
The NOTs process supposedly wakes up these unconscious beings, and
then gets them to work out their identities by specific questioning.
Once the beings have realized what they are being and who they
actually are, they "blow off" from the person who is auditing them and
supposedly go play in the daisies or pick up a human body.
In Hubbard's cosmology, the dynamics of any one individual has the
potential to encompass the entire universe. This theory potentiates
the idea of a nearly infinite amount of power for that individual,
limited only by the force of his will and his continued adherence to
Hubbard's dictates.
In the hierarchy of spiritual existence, according to Hubbard, the
control of others in their environment and the control of the material
universe itself is the mark of the Operating Thetan ®.
How OT is an OT?
<start quote>
[45]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Any perceived solidity in the body is subject to address with NOTs.
One of the end phenomena given for New Era Dianetics for OTs is that
the body or part thereof appears to be transparent. The technical
reason for this subjective perception is that the person has
successfully cleared his/her body of the freeloading BTs. Subjectively
speaking, the body itself transforms and appears as simply a creative
"mockup".
<start quote>
24. And the viewpoints are never seen. And the viewpoints consider
more and more that the dimension points are valuable. And the
viewpoints try to become the anchor points and forget that they can
create more points and space and forms. Thus comes about scarcity. And
the dimension points can perish and so the viewpoints assume that
they, too, can perish. [...][46]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Scarcity of beingness is equivalent to an inability to instantly and
consciously assume any number of identities at will. The general
reason for such inability is that one has become overwhelmed by BTs.
At the level of NOTs, the concept is indoctrinated that if you can
perceive something, it is not you. Therefore, anything that you can
put your attention on and that reads on the e-meter ® is subject to
exorcism with NOTs technology. NOTs is presented as Hubbard's gift
that enables Scientologists to recapture their sovereignty as gods.
At the NOTs level, there is an additional important indoctrination
step regarding the function of the analytical mind itself. Prior to
this step the individual supposedly makes use of mental pictures to
solve problems in life.
<start quote>
The analytical mind combines perceptions of the immediate environment,
of the past (via pictures) and estimations of the future into
conclusions which are based upon the realities of situations. The
analytical mind combines the potential knowingness of the thetan with
the conditions of his surroundings and brings him to independent
conclusions. This mind could be said to consist of visual pictures
either of the past or of the physical universe, monitored by, and
presided over by, the knowingness of a thetan. The keynote of the
analytical mind is awareness. One knows what one is concluding and
knows what one is doing. [47]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Note: The analytical mind as defined here was later clarified to mean
the thetan proper. Ref. Saint Hill ® Special Briefing Course Lecture
Basics of Auditing (1961)
Hubbard revealed in the NOTs materials that persons at Clear do not
have pictures at all, and that the presence of mental pictures is
simply indication of the presence of BTs. It is the BTs who own these
pictures. A person who is Clear supposedly thinks and recalls in pure
concept form. Hubbard similarly assigns dream imagery to BTs.
There is a state in Scientology called Clear OT. I'll mention that
here, as it applies to the phenomena of mental images.
<start quote>
Clear OT, our definition of an operating thetan is that of a Clear
Operating Thetan. This is a proofed-up being who no longer has a bank,
and who has experience. This is a completely stable state--a being who
won't hit the banana peel. (SH Spec 82, 6611C29) [48]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Clear OT is a state in Scientology that can occur at any level above
Clear. The confidential issue on this state describes Clear OT as a
person who no longer has a time track. Hubbard thus revealed that
ultimately, the entire concept of a time track (reactive or otherwise)
is a disposable mental construct.
Inherent in the concept of Operating Thetan is Hubbard's concept of
responsibility.
<start quote>
A thetan accumulates mental mass, pictures, ridges, circuits, etc., to
the degree that he misassigns responsibility. If he does something and
then says that it was done by something or somebody else, then he has
failed to assign cause rightly and, doing so, he is of course left
with an apparently uncaused mental mass. This to us is the "bank." To
Freud it was the "unconscious." To the psychiatrist it is lunacy. He
therefore has as much bank as he has denied cause. As he is the only
cause that could hang himself with a mass, the only missassigned cause
therefore is self cause. Other people's causation is not abberrative
and does not hang up except to the degree that the pc is provoked into
misassigning cause. Other people's cause is therefore never audited.
Here then we have the anatomy of the reactive mind. The common
denominator of all these unwanted ridges, masses, pictures, engrams,
etc., is RESPONSIBILITY.
The discovery of the direct anatomy of RESPONSIBILITY is as follows:
Able to admit causation.
Able to withhold from. [49]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
This is not to say that an OT can claim his BTs were responsible for
some bad condition or unwanted situation in his/her life. Rather, it
is the correct viewpoint in Scientology that the host is responsible
for the actions and influence of his/her BTs and that ultimate
responsibility demands that any BT or cluster involvement (i.e.
"irrational" or unethical behavior) is ultimately resolved by
exorcising those BTs and clusters in auditing. This solution is
applied to all aspects of the person's life and dynamics.
There is a hierarchy of cause here that may be best illustrated with
an outer world example present by policy in any Scientology
organization. Any staff member is completely responsible for his/her
post and for the actions and products of his/her juniors. S/he is
responsible for the discipline of his/her juniors and where s/he fails
in disciplinary duties, s/he can expect to receive the same discipline
from a more senior staff member. It would be incorrect for him/her to
personally take the blame for the junior's shortcoming. This would in
essence be an inability to withhold, per the anatomy of
responsibility. Yet as the person in charge, he must admit cause for
his zone of responsibility. Hubbard's ethics formulas provide the
means by which Scientologists take responsibility in the outer world
for their associations.
Personal and subjective responsibility follows the same course. The
OT, as the host, or in-charge, must be able to admit cause for his/her
own actions, while at the same time correct, control and distance
himself/herself from the underlying irrational influence of his BTs.
Failure to do so adds to the collective reactive mind and is
tantamount to unconscious identification with these underworld
creatures. The individual suffers to the degree of incorrect
assignment of cause, and his/her inabilty to maintain a distance from
the perceived object.

The psychological condition at NOTs level is an extreme situation of
differentiation between subject and object. I have come across no word
in psychology that adequately describes the subjective scenery at this
level. It is a purposeful and controlled psychic fragmentation such
that any perceived and unwanted life situation translates to
quasi-autonomous entities who have heretofore been obstructing one's
will in their legion ways.
The only criteria for addressing BTs are that they a) read on the
e-meter and b) have some bearing on the life situation. Responsibility
for the situation demands that one a) correctly assigns cause for the
situation, b) brings the autonomous entities into consciousness of
their identity and c) eliminate their unconscious parasitic connection
and bedevilment. Elimination of such entities tends to bring about a
subjective reality of increased equilibrium toward the objective life
situation as well as separateness from it. The objective situation may
or may not alter. To my knowledge there has been no independent
scientific study that would shed light on the various subjective
and/or objective effects produced by this procedure.
What I have attempted to describe is different from my understanding
of psychological projection only in that at NOTs level one also
differentiates the form of the object from the BTs that are projected
onto that form. To clarify: a non-processed person projecting their
unconscious contents onto an inappropriate source does not identify
the source as a collection of BTs and clusters attached to their
antagonist. A NOTs level person, in applying Hubbard's NOTs technology
to the situation, would see their antagonist as such a collection.
Many more correlations can be drawn between the Abyss as described by
the followers of the Left Hand Path and the psychological processes of
Scientology and Dianetics ® , so many that there leaves absolutely no
doubt that Hubbard's personal ideology and subsequent development of
Dianetics and Scientology arose directly out of this particular
philosophical background.
<start quote>
One of the control mechanisms which has been used on thetans is that
when they rise in potential they are led to believe themselves one
with the universe. This is distinctly untrue. Thetans are
individuals. They do not, as they rise up the scale, merge with other
individualities. They have the power of becoming anything they wish
while still retaining their own individuality. They are first and
foremost themselves. There is evidently no Nirvana. It is the
feeling that one will merge and lose his own individuality that
restrains the thetan from attempting to remedy his lot. His merging
with the rest of the universe would be his becoming matter. This is
the ultimate in cohesiveness and the ultimate in affinity, and is at
the lowest point of the Tone Scale. One declines into a brotherhood
with the universe. When he goes up scale, he becomes more and more an
individual capable of creating and maintaining his own universe. In
this wise (leading people to believe they had no individuality above
that of MEST [*]) the MEST universe cut out all competition. [50]
--L. Ron Hubbard ®
<end quote>
[*] MEST: Matter, energy, space and time, or the physical universe.
Though certainly not highlighted in any way in Scientology propaganda
or the usual public training courses, Hubbard leaves no question of
his ideal--the extreme concept of separateness. The god making process
as practiced in Scientology is a process of separation and
self-deification within a hierarchical framework. In this light, the
outer hierarchy of the Scientology organization exactly mirrors
Hubbard's model for the mind and the processes of Dianetics at all
levels to achieve this separation.
The effort to separate out the individual commences however, at the
very start of the Bridge. One of the first entry level concepts in
Scientology is that the individual is a thetan and has mistakenly
identified himself/herself with the body. The "correct viewpoint" is
that the thetan is the subject and the body is the object that needs
to be brought back into control by the thetan.
Every step on the Bridge increases the polarity between the body and
the mental construct called the thetan.
<start quote>
25. Thus comes about death.
26. The manifestations of pleasure and pain, of thought, emotion and
effort, of thinking, of sensation, of affinity, reality,
communication, of behavior and being are thus derived and the riddles
of our universe are apparently contained and answered herein.
[...][51]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
For the advanced Scientologist, the idea of death is an indoctrinated
certainty that their conscious awareness--the ego that has been so
inflated by Scientology, will live on past death and that in their
next incarnation they will be able to have complete recall of their
current incarnation and will not suffer any adverse consequences of
body death. They will "pick up" another body and continue with their
Scientology training and processing until they have completed the
entire Bridge, including the several OT levels that have not yet been
released for public delivery.
The idea that the thetan is immortal also justifies Scientology's
ethics penalties against their recalcitrant members and their critics,
as "you cannot hurt a thetan."
<start quote>
27. There is beingness, but man believes there is only becomingness.
[...][52]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Becomingness is the idea that one has a desire that will manifest in
future time. Hubbard taught that the correct viewpoint is simply to
adopt the desired identity. Essentially, the amount of time that one
can eliminate between the intention to be (something/someone) and the
manifestation is proportional to the degree of Operating Thetan that
one has achieved.
Execution of one's intention is covered in Hubbard's administrative
policies.
All choices that a Scientologist makes in his life are predicated upon
his/her assessment of their survival value, i.e., "the greatest good
for the greatest number of dynamics. This is the ethics system. It
dictates at all levels what intentions must be executed and monitors
the progress of those intentions by statistic management.
Any inner world (psychological) or outer world situation is referred
back to the authority of L. Ron Hubbard, whether it be ethics, tech or
admin.
<start quote>
28. The resolution of any problem posed here by is the establishment
of viewpoints and dimension points, the betterment of condition and
concourse amongst dimension points, and, thereby, viewpoints, and the
remedy of abundance or scarcity in all things, pleasant or ugly, by
the rehabilitation of the ability of the viewpoint to assume points of
view and create and uncreate, neglect, start, change and stop
dimension points of any kind at the determinism of the viewpoint.
Certainty in all three universes must be regained, for certainty, not
data, is knowledge. [...][53]
--L. Ron Hubbard
<end quote>
Here Hubbard states that certainty, not data, is knowledge. Hubbard
purports that his system of knowledge is ultimately a knowing-- an
extreme differentiation between subject and any object. This is a
characteristic of God Himself/Herself--the unfragramented view of
existence as separate from but in full control of and ability to BE
anything, as a "causal" entity. This is Hubbard's interpretation of
the hidden Sephira of Daäth.
What Scientologists must miss is that they are never at the top of the
totem pole, and they never will be, for as long as they are in
Scientology. At the other end of the Bridge there is no God but
Hubbard. Within the Scientology paradigm Hubbard is Source--he is
Kether, the Crown. One's status as an OT can never be other than a
position in the hierarchy of Hubbard's illusion.
There is literally no way to remain "OT" outside of the Scientology
framework. The ego inflation that Scientology builds up by way of
training and processing can not be maintained outside of the framework
of Scientology's organizational hierarchy and outside of its ethics
system. Is it any wonder that those leaving Scientology often
experience profound psychological damage by the simple act of leaving?
<start quote>
29. In the opinion of the viewpoint, any beingness, any thing, is
better than no thing, any effect is better than no effect, any
universe better than no universe, any particle better than no
particle, but the particle of admiration is best of all. [...][54]

these things there is the playing of the game. But these things which

teach these things and some may care to use them to assist those in

organizations more able and so give to Earth a culture of which we can
be proud. [55]

measurable and attainable. The ultimate god at any stage of
development is the ego consciousness of the individual, as manipulated
by the hierarchy of gods above and those below him.

I will leave it up to the reader to come to your own conclusions as to
whether the Factors were Hubbard's humbly tendered gift to man or the
confession of a madman. If a person has a right to choose between a
path of unity or a path of self-deification, then Scientology abuses
that right, if only by obscuring the true nature of its mind control
system.
I hope that this look at Scientology's fundamental statement of
philosophy will provide additional information with which to make such
an important choice. If an individual truly desires to follow a Left
Hand path, my only advice is to be sure that it is your own.
