FAQ - Do the Feds Class Scientology as a Religion?

The "Feds" don't have an office that says such and such is or is not a religion, they do however have the IRS... which after 70+ lawsuits by the Scientologists, caved in, granting them a non profit religious status under an unprecedented sealed secret settlement agreement...

Some of the story is here: New York Times - The Shadowy Story Behind Scientology's Tax-Exempt Status By DOUGLAS FRANTZ March 9, 1997

www.lermanet.com/scientologynews/nytimes/nyt-irs-030997.htm

The complete "secret agreement" was leaked to the Wall Street Journal, and is webbed here:

www.lermanet.com/scientologynews/WSJ-secretIRSagreement032597.html

There is still a case that may end up breaking this up - from The LA Times: "They had claimed that part of their payments to Jewish day schools constituted charitable contributions and cited an IRS break given to Church of Scientology members"

www.lermanet.com/scientologynews/latimes/lat-jewishtax-013002.html

With an apellate judge saying essentially that there is a great big dead stinking fish there...

The US Supreme Court had previously ruled that Scientology was not a non-profit...

PDF file of opinion at 9 Circuit Court of Appeals website "An IRS Closing agreement cannot overule Congress and the Supreme Court"...." If the IRS does in fact give preferential treatment to members of ...Scientology-- allowing them a special right to claim deductions that are contrary to law and rightly disallowed to everybody else -- then the proper course of action is a lawsuit to put a stop to that policy ---"
