Dianetics is a corrupted form of Psychiatric therapy called Aberactive Therapy, which was extensively used to treat WWII soldiers suffering from "shell shock" or severe Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Why Scientology uses the E-Meter (That is, what Hubbard told you) was a LIE I have found that what is described by Hubbard as "A floatng needle" is what occurrs when a person in in a relaxed trance state - a light state of hypnosis. When the organization does "meter checks" what they are looking for, are those who are waking up from the Scientology trance.
There is much more about the E-meter, and I know that I need to update my e-meter pages, but until that is done, here are few more than illuminating pages.
It seems there is evidence that suggests that exposure to the current that the e-meter puts through your body, for sufficient time, causes the level of your own body's endorphins to rise. Endorphins bind at the same receptors as morphine, and cause a sense of well being, they are the body's response to pain and as well it seems, to low level doses electricity. After some time, their absence may cause a craving for more auditing...for more electricity
There is another historical source, who was mentioned by William Sargant, a fellow by the name of John Wesley.. Who was using low level electricity to "cure" people.

The first recorded use of electricity to relieve pain was for a small pool to be formed on the shore line washed with sea water, in it was placed an electric fish called a "Black Torpedo" fish, one was directed to hold ones feet upon the fish.
